Anthropic said it will donate 5% of its shares to the public good through a new entity, with plans to increase the commitment as the company grows.

"Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of Anthropic's shares will be committed today, with an additional 2% added at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline," the AI lab announced on Sunday. The plan is still subject to shareholder approval.

The company's last Series H funding round in May 2026 put the company's post-money valuation at $965 billion. Based on that valuation, a 5% equity commitment would mean the company is pledging roughly $48.25 billion to the public good.

The entity, named Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, is established as a wholly owned LLC to allow flexibility in processing different forms of donations. The firm clarified that none of the shares owned by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political reasons.

Distribution to specific populations

Anthropic stated that the new entity may pursue the public good in new ways, such as through direct distributions to specific populations. The Claude maker pointed to labor markets as an example, where AI development could destabilize many jobs.

"Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing this issue, but given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed," the company said. "The Fund will have the versatility to pursue them."

Its pledge builds on top of existing commitments from co-founders and employees. Combined, Anthropic said it is pledging roughly 20% of its shares to the public good.

The Sunday announcement gained significant traction on social media platform X, with Elon Musk responding to Anthropic's plans. "I recommend giving the shares directly to the public," Musk said. "This is what I will be doing."

Some X users raised concerns about Anthropic's ultimate authority in deciding where the donated funds go. AI commentator NIK (ns123abc) noted on X that the process may be flawed, as it leaves the decision of which "specific populations" receive donations entirely up to Anthropic's board.

Anthropic stated that it will share more about the fund's structure and governance in the coming months.
