We correct the record in the open

Material errors are fixed on the story with a dated note that says what was wrong and what changed. Nothing is quietly rewritten to hide a mistake.

How to report an error

  1. Send it to the newsroom

Email editorial@thelatent.co with the story URL, the sentence or figure in question and what you believe is wrong.

  2. Show your working

Link the filing, paper, transcript or data that supports the change. Requests are judged on the evidence, and disagreement with a story is not by itself an error.

  3. We review and respond

An editor checks the claim against the sources and decides. Material errors are corrected promptly, and the decision is never influenced by advertisers, investors or the subject of the story.

How a corrected story is labelled

Depending on what went wrong, a story receives one of five notes. Each explains what was wrong and what was fixed without repeating the error unnecessarily.

  • Update

New information has been added after publication. The original reporting stands.

  • Clarification

The original wording was accurate but could reasonably have been misunderstood.

  • Correction

Published information was materially wrong and has been fixed.

  • Editor’s note

Readers need a fuller explanation of an editorial issue, a substantial change or an unusual circumstance.

  • Retraction

The central premise of a story cannot be supported and a correction alone would not be enough.

How the record is kept

Every format
When an error appeared in a headline, social post, newsletter, push notification, chart or video, that format is corrected too.
Developing stories
Developing stories expand on one permanent URL. New facts arrive as dated updates; the publication date stays fixed and the modified date reflects material change.
Minor edits
Routine copy edits and typographical fixes do not carry a note unless they change the meaning of a sentence.
The full policy
Corrections are section 5 of our editorial standards, alongside the rules on sourcing, independence and disclosure.
