OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Sol and is reportedly seeking a new $30 billion funding round as it pursues a potential 2027 initial public offering.

That funding round would value OpenAI at $1.4 trillion before new capital is added, sources told Bloomberg.

Anthropic, its chief rival, confidentially filed for an IPO in June and reportedly seeks $100 billion at a $2 trillion valuation. Anthropic lost $42 billion in 2025, Reuters reported on Monday.

Separately on Tuesday, Sam Altman’s firm touted the release of GPT-6.1 Sol as delivering performance close to its flagship GPT-6 Astra on several benchmarks while costing about one-fifth of the price. The model costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, while the cached input is priced at 10 cents per million tokens.

OpenAI said the model also improves on GPT-6 Sol in coding and factuality tests and offers a 95% discount on cached input tokens. GPT-6 Sol recently ranked seventh among 25 frontier models on its aggregate Latent score.

"GPT-6.1 Sol offers a new balance of capability and cost for important everyday work," OpenAI wrote Tuesday in a blog post. "It delivers substantial improvements over GPT-6 Sol across complex professional tasks, from writing and debugging code to understanding documents and executing multi-step business workflows."

The launch of GPT-6.1 Sol also comes just one day after OpenAI scrapped a planned October release of GPT-6.1 Astra following internal testing that raised safety concerns.
