arXiv AI and Machine Learning Monthly Submissions
Monthly entries in arXiv’s cs.AI and cs.LG category archives, a timely gauge of AI research activity and dissemination. Counts include primary-category and cross-listed papers; because one paper may appear in both categories, the two lines overlap and must not be added.
arXiv AI and Machine Learning Monthly Submissions
- Artificial Intelligence (cs.AI)
- Machine Learning (cs.LG)
arXiv listed 4,731 count cs.AI entries and 4,090 count cs.LG entries in 2026-07-31.
Methodology
Each value is the "Total of … entries" figure displayed on arXiv's official monthly category archive at /list/cs.AI/YYYY-MM or /list/cs.LG/YYYY-MM. The extraction retrieved all 86 category-month totals on August 27, 2026; no third-party series, interpolation, or estimate is used.
The metric is category-list membership, not primary-category-only submissions. arXiv states that every article has one primary category and may have cross-lists, and that a cross-listed article appears in the regular listing for the additional category. Therefore each monthly total includes primary-category articles plus articles cross-listed into cs.AI or cs.LG.
The two series overlap because one paper can carry both cs.AI and cs.LG classifications. They are plotted as separate lines and must not be stacked, added, or interpreted as a deduplicated total of AI-and-ML papers.
A paper is represented once in a category's archive for the year-month associated with its arXiv identifier. Replacements are not additional observations. Historical category totals can change if arXiv moderators or authors later alter category assignments or cross-lists, so updates should refresh the complete history.
Chart timestamps use the final calendar day of each represented month at 00:00:00 UTC. August 2026 is excluded because August 27 falls before month-end; July 2026 is the latest complete month.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly does this chart count?
It records the “Total of … entries” displayed in arXiv’s official monthly cs.AI and cs.LG category archives for each arXiv identifier month. It measures category-listed papers, not downloads, citations, authors, article versions, peer-reviewed publications, or all arXiv submissions.
Why is this relevant to AI research and industry activity?
Category volume is a timely indicator of how much AI and ML work is being publicly disseminated, often before journal or conference publication. It can signal research momentum and a growing knowledge base for industry, but it does not measure quality, novelty, citations, commercial adoption, or research spending.
How should changes in monthly volume be interpreted?
Higher counts mean more entries appeared in that category archive for the month, not necessarily more unique AI papers or better research. Submission schedules, conferences, holidays, moderation, classification practices, and cross-listing can affect month-to-month movement, so sustained patterns are more informative than a single spike.
How were the values sourced and processed?
Each value was copied from the total displayed on the official /list/cs.AI/YYYY-MM or /list/cs.LG/YYYY-MM archive page. The extraction collected every complete month, timestamped it at calendar month-end UTC, and used no sampling, interpolation, estimate, or third-party series; completed years were reconciled to official annual totals.
What cross-listing and classification limitations apply?
Each total includes papers with the category as primary plus papers cross-listed into it. A paper can appear in both cs.AI and cs.LG, so the lines must not be added or treated as a deduplicated AI-paper total. Category assignments can also change later, causing historical totals to be revised when the full history is refreshed.
Why does the chart stop at July 2026?
The research cutoff was August 27, 2026, before August ended. July is therefore the latest complete calendar month; excluding the partial month preserves comparability.
