Anthropic PBC has mended its relationship with the U.S. government, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said on Wednesday during an interview with Bloomberg Television at a G20 tech event in North Carolina.

"We had a good kerfuffle," Lutnick said. "It was out there, but they've gotten religion. They understand."

The commerce secretary explained that by "religion," he meant that Anthropic now realizes that "there is no country better than America" and that the company must stay aligned with the U.S. because America is on its side.

Lutnick added that President Donald Trump, himself, and other officials helped to restore the relationship. "We're all in tune together," Lutnick added.

Public rift

The rift between Anthropic and the U.S. government became public earlier this year after the company refused Pentagon's demand for unrestricted use of Claude, including for fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. President Trump then ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic's technology, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled Anthropic a "supply-chain risk" to national security.

In March, Anthropic filed federal lawsuits against the Pentagon, saying the ban was an unlawful retaliation. A California judge later said the ban was "illegal and baseless."

However, the feud continued to grow as the Trump administration ordered Anthropic to cut off foreign access to its new models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5 in June. These limits were lifted two weeks later, as Anthropic made efforts to address the administration's national security concerns, Bloomberg said.

At Wednesday's G20 event, Anthropic Co-founder Tom Brown reportedly joined Lutnick in a fireside chat and endorsed Trump's call for building more AI infrastructure, indicating that the relationship is on the mend.

The restoration comes at a critical time for Anthropic, as it prepares for an initial public offering that could be even bigger than SpaceX's record-setting IPO, according to Bloomberg.

Still, the report noted that it is unclear whether Anthropic's relationship with the Defense Department is also being reconciled.
