President Donald Trump announced a meeting next week to discuss artificial intelligence as his administration moves to establish parameters for AI’s growing role in the financial industry.
On Wednesday during a press conference with technology leaders and federal agency chairs, Trump said a meeting will take place next week with "top people in AI."
"We're ensuring that America remains the undisputed leader, not only in bitcoin and crypto, but also in technologies like prediction markets, artificial intelligence, and much more," Trump said during the conference.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment seeking more details about the meeting.
The Trump administration has taken a pro-AI, deregulatory stance. In executive orders issued over the past year, the administration called for accelerating AI development, including by expanding data-center infrastructure.
This past week, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission took a step, particularly with AI computer power. On Wednesday, the CFTC put out a request for comment for the listing of compute derivatives contracts — financial contracts whose value is tied to the price of computer power.
“Just as American markets helped establish the gold standard for trading the commodities that powered the industrial economy, we will do the same for the commodity that will power the intelligence economy," Selig said in a statement. "This request for comment is the first step toward establishing clear rules of the road for American compute markets.”
Speaking Thursday during a CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee meeting, Chair Michael Selig said the agency is partnering with the Department of Commerce to tackle AI, with its request for comment as a first step.
"Just as American markets helped establish the gold standard for trading the commodities that powered the industrial economy, we will do the same for the commodity that will power the intelligence economy," Selig said.
