U.S. President Donald Trump has named Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to lead the "Super Intelligence Force" to coordinate the federal government's AI efforts.

In a Sunday post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the task force is tasked with coordinating the federal government's AI-related engagement with consumers, public interest groups, religious organizations, critical infrastructure providers, and AI companies.

The team will be led by Clayton, alongside Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Director of the Office of Personnel Management Scott Kupor. The task force will report to Trump and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

On Saturday, Clayton told the Wall Street Journal that the task force will produce a report within 120 days to assess the risks and opportunities of AI, as well as the federal government's responsibility for overseeing the technology.

"The risk of not being first is high," Clayton told the publication. "Not being first increases the identified, and unidentified, risks, particularly from our adversaries. Being first will better enable us to address those risks on behalf of the American people."

Trump's administration has been vocal about advancing AI development and has made it a priority in its technological race with China, despite growing safety concerns raised by lawmakers and prominent industry figures.

Last week, Trump signed an executive order renaming AI as "super intelligence," or SI.

"They [frontier systems] increasingly amplify human ingenuity and unlock new forms of creativity, empowering Americans to achieve what was previously impossible across science, medicine, and nearly every other domain of human endeavor," the order said. "As these capabilities continue to improve, they increasingly represent not merely artificial intelligence, but a new era of Super Intelligence."

Michael also said Sunday on X that the government is "putting the most advanced SI capabilities" into the hands of the country's warfighters at speed and scale, working alongside major technology companies.

"[The] U.S. will continue to lead in SI to enhance the well-being of all Americans," said Kupor.
